What is obstetrical care?
Obstetrical care is the medical term for the practice of caring for women, and their baby’s health, through the entire stage of motherhood, you will begin by starting with prenatal care and end with postnatal care. An obstetrician should always providea mother fully guided obstetrical care for all three trimesters of her pregnancy and labor.
Obstetrical care, in the prenatal phase, is mainly consisting of screenings for any complications and disorders. Going into the first trimester, the tests will continue. These tests typically include genetic screening for disorders such as downs syndrome in the first trimester, ultrasounds to monitor the fetal health in the second trimester, and glucose loading tests in the third trimester.
During child labor, an obstetrician will monitor the progress by checking on the nursing chart, measuring the vaginal dilation, reading and assessing the results on the cardiotocograph. A cardiotocograph is a medical device that measures the fetal heartbeat.
The obstetrician will also provide the mother postnatal care, which includes monitoring health and bodily functions. Addressing any concerns about any type of bleeding, bowel and bladder functions, and baby care. The obstetrician will also recommend to the mother when it is safe and best to go home and leave the hospital after childbirth.
What is an OBGYN?
An OBGYN is a medical doctor that has completed his/her postgraduate training program in obstetrics and gynecology. Obstetrics is the branch of medicine that is concentrated and focused on childbirth and the care that is given to women before, during and after their pregnancy. Gynecology is the branch of medicine that is concerned with medical conditions and diseases that are specific to women, especially focused on the female reproductive system.
An OBGYN is specially trained to perform both roles, an obstetrician and a gynecologist. They are able to do this because they have completed a board-approved residency and have passed a board-certified exam.
What other women’s services does an OBGYN assist with?
The best way to treat and address any medical issue is being diligent with preventive care. This is one of the reasons why it is very important for women to see their gynecologist or OBGYN on a regular basis. Pap smears and well women exams can help identify problems before they become more serious. During your visit, your OBGYN will perform evaluations, immunizations, or lab test for specific diseases. This will largely depend on your age group. In addition to regular screenings, the doctors here at Capital Women’s Care believe in offering our patients compassionate and customized care & treatment for conditions such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, irregular and/or painful menstrual bleeding, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, and overactive bladder.
