Ultrasound Services Q & A

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a type of imaging that uses sound waves to create a picture. These sound waves are safe for you and your baby. When the sound waves are bounced into your womb, they reflect off your baby, forming the shape of your growing child and helping your Capital Women’s Care OB/GYN see your baby’s positioning in your womb, track their growth, and more.

Ultrasound technology is used to create a flat image of your baby. Still, Capital Women’s Care knows that mothers treasure these early looks at their children, so they also offer the technology to get 3D and 4D ultrasounds. The latter plays like a video so you can see your child moving in your womb.

Why should I get an ultrasound?

An ultrasound isn’t just an opportunity to peek behind the curtain and see your little one. It’s also an important screening tool. Capital Women’s Care recommends your first ultrasound around 16-20 weeks into your pregnancy.

Looking at your baby throughout your pregnancy allows your Capital Women’s Care practitioner to check that:

  • Your baby grows properly
  • Your baby moves normally
  • Your ovaries and uterus are healthy
  • There are no complications or birth defects present

Using your ultrasound, your Capital Women’s Care provider can give you the most accurate due date possible.

If any abnormalities are found during your ultrasound, Capital Women’s Care works with you to address them. They prioritize your and your baby’s health and have a wide range of services available so you can enjoy a happy, healthy pregnancy.

What happens during an ultrasound?

During your ultrasound, you relax and lie back. You will need to bare your belly to get the best look at your baby. Your Capital Women’s Care OB/GYN moves a transducer, the ultrasound device, over your stomach, often with the aid of a gel to ensure no air pockets get in the way of the imaging.

As the transducer moves over your stomach, it creates an image of your baby that you can see on a computer monitor. Capital Women’s Care prints this image for you so you can take it home to treasure.

If you’re ready to see your baby, schedule an ultrasound by calling Capital Women’s Care or requesting your appointment online today.
