Well Woman Exams Q & A

What are well-women exams?

Your well-woman exam is an annual opportunity to make sure you’re generally healthy and to ensure your reproductive system isn’t experiencing any conditions that could compromise it. By meeting with your Capital Women’s Care provider once a year, you allow them to comprehensively check your body for any issues.

The goal of the well-woman exam is preventive care — helping you identify and deal with health problems as early as possible. Catching health conditions early makes them easiest to treat. As a result, this annual visit is an excellent way to be proactive about keeping yourself healthy.

What happens during a well-woman exam?

At Capital Women’s Care, a typical annual preventive exam includes:

  • Documenting your health habits and reviewing your family history
  • Measuring your height and weight
  • Checking your blood pressure and temperature
  • Performing a breast exam
  • Performing a pelvic exam and Pap smear (if scheduled)
  • Helping you set health goals

Once your Pap smear comes back normal, you won’t need another one for three years unless you have a heightened risk for certain conditions, such as a family history of cervical cancer.

Additionally, you and your physician use the well-women visit as an opportunity to talk about the next steps for helping you stay healthy. It’s an opportunity to ask questions you have and get the education you need to make healthy decisions about what you eat, how you handle stress, any medication you take, and more. Together, you can also review and decide which screenings or follow-up services might be right for you.

How much will my well-woman exams cost?

Each year, every woman can get one free well-woman exam covered by the Affordable Care Act. The cost is fully covered as a preventive benefit, which means it’s free even if you haven’t met your plan’s deductible.

In short, a well-woman exam is a no-cost way to make sure you’re staying as healthy as possible. Not only does it allow Capital Women’s Care to screen you for a variety of health conditions, but it’s also a chance to talk with your provider. During this exam, you can ask any questions you have about your health and get the guidance you need to lead your healthiest life.
