Well woman exams are an essential component of any woman’s total-body health and well-being. They are also called gynecological exams, pelvic exams, or annual exams. Well woman exams provide essential preventative screenings that can ensure your health for years to come, and can provide early detection of serious conditions including cancer that could otherwise be more difficult to treat. Our goal is to provide comfortable and stress-free well woman exams to all of our patients, so that we can help you understand your body and its needs, discuss any concerns you may have about your intimate health, and effective treat any medical issues that might be detected.

Annual gynecological exams are not typically something most women look forward to. They can make women feel especially vulnerable and are not considered one of the more comfortable medical experiences. However, gynecological appointments can offer important insight into your overall health and are necessary for detecting serious issues including cervical cancer, ovarian cysts, breast cancer, sexually transmitted infections, and uterine fibroids. At Capital Women’s Care in Virginia, Dr. Afram and his experienced team of medical providers strive to offer well woman exams that are as comfortable as possible by creating a friendly and compassionate office environment where our patients feel safe to discuss any concerns they may have about their health.

There are three main aspects to a well woman exam: a breast exam, pelvic exam, and pap smear. Your breast exam will include a visual inspection of your breasts and include palpation of each breast and examination of your underarms. Your pelvic exam will include inspection of exterior genitalia, a bimanual exam, and a speculum exam. The speculum exam is typically the least comfortable part of your well woman visit, but it is necessary to examine the interior of your vagina, cervix, and uterus. A pap smear is a test that uses a sample of cells from your uterine fornix and cervix to screen for potential abnormalities. You may also elect to have STD testing conducted as part of your exam, which is especially recommended for women who have multiple or new sexual partners to ensure their health and safety.
