Why do I need to see a gynecologist?

Routine checkups are vital for a woman to maintain the health of their reproductive system. A gynecologist is a medical professional that specializes in this area, which includes the vagina, vulva, uterus, ovaries, cervix, and fallopian tubes. Our doctors can also assist you if you need more information about sexuality, menopause, infertility, and other medical issues. If you need to know more about contraception, we can answer any questions you might have and direct you to sources where you can learn more. These are just some of the reasons why a woman would visit our clinic for assistance. Our female gynecologists are also certified to provide prenatal care and some primary care.

Is it important to see a gynecologist?

Yes, it is! You should be invested in your reproductive health and preventive care is the best way to detect issues early, so they don’t become larger, more expensive medical problems later. Preventive care includes regular gynecological examinations and regular checks ups. These should be scheduled regularly and not when you are showing symptoms. Regular testing and screenings are needed as many reproductive issues do not present any overt symptoms in their early stages. Catching these disorders early will make it easier for our providers to treat them effectively. Regular visits to our gynecologists also allow us to bring you up to date with any new discoveries or breakthroughs in technology. What were recommendations for screenings and tests a couple of years ago could be different today.

You can visit our gynecologists for their expertise in keeping your reproductive system healthy or for other general health care. Our doctors will also conduct other routine screenings, including depression, diabetes, cholesterol, and high blood pressure. They will also want to note and review with you any usage of tobacco, drugs, or alcohol.

When should I visit a gynecologist?

Women should start to visit their gynecologist every year sometime between the ages of 13 and 18. Pelvic examinations generally do not start before the age of 21 unless there is a medical concern that needs to be addressed. These concerns can include pelvic pain, abnormal vaginal discharge, or irregular periods. Sexually active adolescents should be tested for sexually transmitted disease (STDs) as well. Yearly pelvic examinations should start for women around the age of 21, however you can talk with our doctors to discuss if these are needed and how often they may be needed. A yearly examination while suggested, is not needed for all women in all cases. Women should also start being tested for cervical cancer when they turn 21. This test is known as a pap smear.

How do I pick a gynecologist?

A woman should choose someone they feel very comfortable with to discuss these sensitive topics. Many women may be embarrassed to bring up things like sex, pregnancy, menopause, or birth control with their regular doctor. However, these subjects are vital to talk about with our providers so we can help maintain your health. A pediatrician can do a gynecological evaluation of adolescent girls if they have experience in that area. However, it is often best to partner with a doctor who specializes in the field. A gynecologist is more likely to have time to speak with an adolescent privately about their concerns. It is crucial for teens to learn more about reproduction, sexual function, as well as safe sex practices and how to avoid STDs.
