Capital Women’s Care gives the region access to testing, expert advice, and various other services to keep both women and their baby healthy.

Ultrasounds

An ultrasound is a diagnostic test that uses sound waves to capture an image of your developing baby. We can determine if he or she is growing properly, assess for certain health issues, and often are able to determine the gender. Most women have three ultrasounds during their pregnancy – one during each trimester.

Routine Lab Screenings

During your pregnancy, we provide both urine and blood evaluations in addition to at least one non-stress test. We use blood tests to measure your hormone levels. Abnormal levels can mean your baby is at risk for chromosomal abnormalities or other complications. We also conduct a complete blood cell count and urinalyses to evaluate for infections. At each examination, we check your blood sugar. Around weeks 24 through 28, we give you an oral glucose screening. In addition, you’ll receive a test for strep toward the end of your pregnancy. At the end of your pregnancy, we also perform a non-stress test, contraction stress test, and biophysical profile. Our physician will monitor you closely during the end of your pregnancy to determine how far you’re dilated and effaced.

Genetic Testing

Genetic testing analyzes your baby’s genes before birth to test for any chromosomal abnormalities. We don’t require it for all pregnancies. Instead, we offer it to women who are most at risk for their baby having a disorder. Our ob-gyn can take a swab sample from the inside of your mouth and perform certain genetic testing. We may recommend you have chorionic villus sampling between 11 to 14 weeks. This test consists of our physician taking a sample from either your cervix or abdominal wall. We can test it for Down syndrome and other similar issues. An amniocentesis is another test we can perform. During this test, our physician takes a sample of amniotic fluid. We can use it to detect genetic issues as well as a method to check for infection.

Other Services

Our physician offers lifestyle advice to help you have a better pregnancy in addition to helping you during labor and delivery. You also receive guidance on how to optimize health in your unborn baby. If medications are necessary, we prescribe safe ones for you and your baby. If there’s any point during your pregnancy that you require specialized care, our gynecologist can refer you to a specialist.
